Lots of ways:
You can go by train (jersey coast line) , bus (Academy), or drive to the ferry in Atlantic Highlands. Depends on where in NYC you are going, how you like to travel, how much you want to pay, and how quickly you want to get there.
Plenty of homeowners live in the area and go each day.

I verify the below. The train tends to be a longer trip. I take it from Little Silver, above Long Branch and the train change.

There is an express bus from Exit 98 on the parkway or you could take the train right from Belmar (which requires a transfer in Long Branch).

Aamir,

You really have two options. It all depends where you are going:

- To get to New York Penn station area, you need to get train from Belmar. Sometimes, it will require a train change at Long Branch, but it is coordinated: http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/rail/r0080.pdf
- To get to Port Authority terminal, take a bus from Monmouth Service area (~ exit 98): http://www.academybus.com/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=7WSlnofu…
- To get to Downtown along Broadway, take a bus from Monmouth Service area (~ exit 98): http://www.academybus.com/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=7Jy3mD-z…
