Hi Wgruda and thanks for your post.
Typically, when rating schools in the area, we tend to rely more heavily on the API scores rather than the http://www.greatschools.com
rating program of 1-10. That rating is based on input from students and parents, and is not necessarily wholly academically based. Now, the nice part is that the Great Schools site will give you all of the 8, 9 and 10 rated schools in a general area. You have only to look at their information to determine which schools will fit your needs for High School with diversity and neighborhood appeal.
In San Jose, Great Schools has the following 7 High Schools that rate 8 or above:
University Preparatory Academy Charter (8)
Pioneer High School (8)
Evergreen High School (8)
Leland High School (9)
KIPP San Jose Collegiate (9)
Middle College High (10)
Lynbrook High School (10)
Once you've pinpointed a few areas that you like, you might take a drive out to those areas to get a better feel for the community, types of homes and the neighborhoods, and, most importantly, the pricing in the area. Use http://www.crimereports.com
to determine safety statistics in any area.
Finally, work with a great agent. The agent can help you find a home in a community that you like. If you're intent on doing some of the "footwork" yourself, you can also look at http://www.mlslistings.com
to see all of the homes for sale on the local Multiple Listing Services in Santa Clara. Then give your favorite agent a call for help. Remember, a few of us even give sizeable rebates to clients when they buy a home.
