Public data in limited amount can be free. By spending a little money you can usually get a lot more, especially from (smaller) counties that don’t have publicly accessible websites or put restrictions on the type and sensitivity of data. Private services, such as HomeInfoMax.com in most cases offer comprehensive nationwide information, including the ownership records, copies of documents, parcel maps and certain liens.

Most counties will have this information available on the Property Appraiser or Tax Collector's website. This can usually be found doing a simple search using the county name on Google or Yahoo. Sites vary with the information they provide but most will give the date of sale, price, previous owner, and some information about the property.

Denise,
If you give a specific address an agent here on Trulia might be able to help, too.
