There are many good answers to your question about wanting to buy homes that are on back taxes and
then sell them. The best advice is to contact a Realtor in the state in which you have interest. Peter Newman
gives very good advice. His show is mentioned in email below.

Just to add to the others who haven given some great information, you should do your research to see the rate of interest on each state to purchase tax lien certifficates. The rate of interest varies and not all states have tax lien certificates you can purchase. Missouri is one state you can purchase tax lien certficates, but one of the higher rate of interest is Iowa. Peter Newman gives occasional talks on this subject and also has a Saturday radio show:

Are you interested in purchasing a tax lien certificate?
This means you’re investing your money in a piece of real estate where the owner owes back taxes on the property. Its pretty complicated but start by going to the county website where you want to purchase tax lien certificates. If you have a property you’re interested in or know a county where you want to buy tax lien certificates, find the county website. The county websites typically offer a list of tax lien certificates that are for sale. The procedures for buying tax lien certificates vary from county to county, so the website explains the process the county uses to sell them.
