It really depends on the complex or area. Each one is different.

The home owners association fee generally is a monthly fee for landscaping, snow removal, and at times, club house fees. Generally in NE, these fees relate to homes in condominium divisons, and not single family homes.
Easy to find out the details. Just contact your realtor, or the local real estate office.

HOA could be monthly, quarterly or yearly.

It depends on if you are talking about a condo or for a single family home in a neighborhood development. Most condo association fees are monthly and cover outside maintenance, snow plowing, master insurance, etc. and you are responsible for maintaining the inside of your unit. If paying for a single family home, again it may be a monthly fee or a yearly fee and it would cover things like road maintenance and common area land upkeep, etc.

There could be several ways to find out if an HOA fee is monthly or yearly. You can call the person that listed the HOA fee. You can call the associations itself, or you can ask the residents.

HOA fees can bust up a good Deal:
It would depend in what included in the HOA's responsability; if it is just street repairs and a security gate, it could run from $50 to $300 a month.
If there is a lot of common area, with a clubhouse, maybe a community swimming pool , it could run $300 to $500 per month.
I have seen really nice and exclusive places with a fee of $1200 per month.

I am not a fan of HOA's, both as a past resident and as a Realtor trying to sell in an HOA.
But you can make your own decision:
My suggestion would be to walk around and meet some of the residents and ask them about their HOA.
