Yorkville? What is the difference between the other parts of the Upper East Side and Yorkville?

Asked by A. Buyer, New Jersey Wed May 21, 2008

Trulia has Yorkville as a separate neighborhood. The prices also appear to be slightly lower. What are the characteristics of this neighborhood and how does it differ from the other parts of the Upper East Side?

I find it to be a safe area. Lots of students live in the area. Many of the buildings are older. Condos are cheaper as lots of them do not have doormen, posh amenities. Many of the condos are smaller as well.

The neighborhood west of third Avenue from 80th - 96 streets to the East river is Yorkville. The name comes from York Avenue, named after a village whose center was 86th Street and Third Avenue and was the city's major German-American community

It's always been a desirable residential neighborhood. Carl Schulz Park, contains the Mayor's Residence at Gracie Mansion and overlooks the East River and several major bridges to the north. Yorkville borders some of the most expensive and prestigious buildings in Manhattan. Prices are lower west of third Avenue.

There are many bars and restaurants along first Avenues. Yorkville is famous for it's coffee houses and pubs. Some of the restaurants and shops are still around from the old neighborhood but the area has boomed in the last 10-15 years with new residential developments and new retail particularly along 86th Street, the hub of the neighborhood. Yorkville is a great neighborhood for all types of lifestyles and financials.

I just listed a Junior 4 (2 BR or Formal Dining Room/Office/Den 1 bath) in a full service building at 86th and First Avenue. 401 east 86th St. # 3-H. I'm having the first showing this Sunday, May 17, from 1pm - 3 pm. It is featured on the web site below. Feel free to call me for more information. Hope to see you Sunday.
