Would a seller agree to take rent toward a deposit?

Not sure why a seller would do that. If a buyer cannot save money on their own, I would question doing a deal with someone that can't manage their finances.

As James says, the seller can accept anything of value as payment.

This is where a good buyer's agent can help. Have your agent find out if this is going to be acceptable - they can ask the listing agent before putting it into a formal offer. The risk is that the seller may not accept this if they have preferable terms in other offers and you may not get a chance to start negotiating.

A seller can accept anything of value or consideration as payment. The question is, will they?
It never hurts to ask. The worst anyone can say is no. Maybe they will consider it, or counter offer until both of you reach a compromise that is good for all.
