Unlike the Midwest and the Northeast, where basements are expected on every home-they're rare here. Basements are just more expensive to build here. Our soil is red clay-which is incredibly dense and retains water. These two factors mean that it's expensive to dig one out and expensive to get it properly waterproofed. You will find walk-out basements available, mostly in new construction (and seldom below the $300,000 mark) and on lots with a natural topography that supports a walkout basement.
Some of our older homes in neighborhoods like Chantilly and Elizabeth will have the old cellar-style basements, but they're not intended for much more than occasional storage.
