When it comes to any safety/crime related issues, it's always best to contact the local authorities with all your questions, hear all there is to hear firsthand. If unfamiliar with the area(s) do revisit more than once and at different times of day, possibly chat with locals/neighbors. Real estate professionals are prohibited from steering, enticing a buyer to purchase/rent, or not, in specific neighborhoods.

The Garden district has private patrol and is considered to be a "relatively safe" neighborhood, if you want to live in a condo without being downtown and still have parking 1205 St. Charles may be a good option as well as a lot of other condos in the garden district as well.

Best area to live is River Ridge or Harahan. Lived in the greater New Orleans area all my life, areas that used to be "safe" are not so much any more. Lived in Terrytown growing up and never even locked the doors. Not like that now. Worst is uptown, downtown, and Algiers. Forget the "Garden District" parking is a real problem, especially if you hire people a lot! I know I work around there. Hope this helps!
