There are great opportunites all over the bay area right now. There are beautiful homes all over Berkeley, a very desirable neighborhood is close to the college where you get great properties with specticular views. Contact a mortgage broker for a loan I could recomend one if you like. Good luck with your search.

This is a great time to buy a bank-owned foreclosure. Buy it for less than the usual over-inflated Berkeley prices. It may take some time so why not rent while you look for the right place at a decent price.

there are two great walking to retail areas in Berkeley within walking distance also to the University. One is on Shattuck Avenue near Cedar Street - known as the Gourmet Ghetto. This is a neighborhood that is safe, has good services and stores within a short walk and good housing stock. Another is the neighborhood southwest of the University - close to Sather Gate. This is also walking to good services area and walking distance to the University - lower price homes here, but good streets. This is bordered by College Avenue - to Shattuck Avenue and Ashby Avenue up to Dwight Way. Best to look these up on the map and go online to see what is available for rent and sale. Remember, most rentals are listed on Craig's List. All the Best. Liz

Beruchim Habaim le Berkeley

Welcome to Berkeley! Once you're here it will be easier for you to determine where you'd prefer to live. Having a young kid, you may prefer to live in flatter areas rather than in the hills, where sometimes there are no sidewalks, or you may actually like the peace and quite of that area... Sometimes google earth -street view can help get a sense of the streets and houses in certain neighborhoods..

In terms of the mortgage, it may be trickier, since presumably you have no credit history in the US, but to find out more you should talk to a mortgage broker you trust. Most real estate agents will be able to give you some referrals, or you can also choose to go to the lender directly.

Prices vary a lot depending on the neighborhood. trulia.com, or other similar sites, will help you with that. And, if you plan on coming to the Bay Area before you move here, ask a Realtor to drive you around. Ask to see a wide range of prices in different areas, and get a feeling for what you want to spend, and where.

Good luck!

There are many fantastic areas to live within a mile or two of the UC Berkeley campus, from North Berkeley to Elmwood to the Gourmet Ghetto to Oakland's Rockridge district.

It would be very helpful to know their preferences for proximity to transportation, shopping, etc. If they want to contact me directly, I can suggest lenders to work with, as well.

Prices will vary by neighborhood, but a 3-bedroom home is likely going to run them at least $650,000 on the low end in a safe neighborhood.
