1) Tax returns for the past 2 years
2) A list of all the money you owe
3) all the money you have in savings, 401K, etc. = YOUR ASSETS
Once you get it altogether, find a mortgage broker, then a Realtor

Hi JTurner,

It is very important to be informed about this process and I am glad that you are asking ahead of time. I am placing a link below for an article that I wrote in regards to the steps for buying a home. I hope that you find it helpful.

I would also recommend finding an agent in your area that is experienced with first time home buyers. They will be able to walk you through and make the process as painless as possible. :)

Best of luck and Happy Holidays! I hope the article helps!

Just like shopping for anything else, you're going to go through several stages of gathering information, deciding what you like, figuring out your budget . . .you may end up working with a Realtor to help you, or you may want to go it alone.

You'll probably need a mortgage, so the bank will also be deciding whether to lend to you .. . the info you'll need to give them is to verify your financial circumstances, so expect to have your most recent paycheck stubs and tax returns handy.

If you are first-time buyers, you might also enjoy my book.
