What is the comparison between sales prices and tax assessed values?

Are houses selling for less, more or about the same as the assessed value in Helotes?

Amschultz68, make sure you understand it is "usually" 80 % of the market value. I have seen properties under valued and over valued, in all areas of town. It is not what you can base a sales price on. You need to see the sales prices of comparable homes in that area from the last 6 months, to determine the price of a home.

Property assessed for the purpose of taxes is determined by the county assessors. The building and land values are determined separately. Each district uses it's own methods of determining value but is usually around 80% of Market Value.

Market Value is what property is expected to sell for.

Market price is what the property actually sold for.

It depends. Bexar County appraisers do usually not have access to the interior of the property. Some houses have all the bells and whistles and some do not. Bexar County appraised values are not an accurate guideline to go by.
