First, it's important to know that Montclair and Upper Montclair are one town with one school system and two zip codes. Both my children went through the Montclair school system beginning in the 1980s and each attended a different elementary school - one went to the Gifted & Talented Magnet and one went to the Science and Technology Magnet.

The magnet school program which was instituted in the 1970s was designed to integrate the school system by drawing children from different parts of town to a school based on a special program in each school. While all schools have the same core curriculum, each also has a specialized program - Gifted & Talent with an emphasis on the arts at Nishuane and Hillside, International at Northeast, Montessori at Edgemont, etc. Parents whose child is entering the school system are encouraged to visit each school and then select the school they would like their child to attend, although you don't always get your first choice. Busing is provided to children attending school in different parts of town. The system has worked very well and has been used as a model for integrating schools in other communities.

Montclair is considered to have an excellent school system. The board of education can provide you with quite a lot of information including an informational cd.

One of the beautiful things about the Magnet Program in Montclair is that all kids in all neighborhoods have a shot at the same great education. I went through these schools myself and now have two young sons thriving in these schools - wouldn't trade it for anything. I'd be happy to talk to you about what the various schools offer, but nothing beats going and having a tour - each school has its own unique culture and you just know when you go. School tours by the PTA usually start in January, but check the website for more information: http://www.montclair.k12.nj.us

Buyer777,

You heard correctly. The schools in Montcair are "Magnet schools" they are concentrating on a certain area (science, art ets..) from an early age. They are rated very well in the area.

You can read more information about the schools at http://www.greatschools.com or at the montclair website http://www.montclair.k12.nj.us/WebPage.aspx?Id=1

Good luck

Since opinions often are suggestive and what may be good for one child is not necessarily the case for another, consider a visit to the school district--ask for a tour of the facilities, speak to the principal, teachers, etc., ask all your questions and then make your own determination--will your comfort level be reached.

Check out Magnet schools- Google the two words. Read about them. Visit and tour. Basically, the schools reflect the real world in diversity. Do you have a question though?
