What are the areas w/ the best schools in Austin?

Asked by Sushi, Austin, TX Wed Oct 5, 2011

we are looking for moving to Austin due to the quality of its schools. We heard a lot about Eanes ISD as being the top schools from elementary to high school, but that area is a bit expensive and mostly older homes. What are the 2nd best options and how well they compare to Eanes (very close or distant 2nd)?

We would like to be as close as possible to the high tech companies w/o compromising too much on the school quality. Being close to Austin downtown is also a plus.

Need advices to pick the areas w/ the best schools to focus the house hunting.

many thanks

Since schools are so important you should check out these websites to help you determine which school district you want to live in. Choose the school then look in the neighborhoods that feed into your preferred school. These websites rank the teacher student ratio and many other important criteria for parents. http://www.SchoolMatters.com and http://www.GreatSchools.org. Schools can vary a lot within a particular district, these sites will help you to decide which school you want your children to attend. These sites also have articles about issues that are important for parents: bullying, tutors, moving with small children, how to choose the right school, children with learning disabilities, etc.

I am also including a link to blog I wrote listing some of the private schools in the Austin area which may also interest you. Here is another link to a post from http://www.GreatSchools.org on "choosing the right school for your child from a distance": I think you will find it very helpful. http://www.greatschools.org/find-a-school/moving/3986-choosi…

Westwood High School and its feeder schools are good in Round Rock ISD, which is not as high as the Eanes ISD. Where will you be working and you can back in to the areas that might be a good fit as far as schools. Another consideration you might consider is traffic.

Hi Sushi,
There are several school districts in the Austin area that have exemptary ratings, Round Rock has many high tech industry leaders close by...but some of Austin ISD schools are highly rated as well, for being close to downtown... I suggest you select a Buyers agent (fee's paid by Sellers) and let them do some indept research... taking into account the many factors that go into the home shopping experience.

I would welcome the opportunity to work with you...find my bio at... http://www.onepercentusa.com or feel free to call or text me at 512-965-1233 or email at sstark2@austin.rr.com.

There are several smaller school districts similar to eanes. There are several hidden area of Eanes school district that might meet your needs. Lake Travis is also a great school district with many kids in the local neighborhoods. Take a look on HGTV on November 29th at 7pm, I will be on HGTV's "My First Place" If you like how I represent my clients, give me call and let me help you find the home you and your family need.

Hi Sushi,

There are many things that will factor in on your decision on where to buy. Schools are just one, although one of the most important. It is important that you have a Realtor working with you and on your behalf from the get go. We all have our favorite schools. Mine is Clayton Elementary in Circle C. But, other exemplary schools are favorites of others. You want to indentify all of your needs when looking for a place to call home - schools, commute time, proximity to downtown, area amenities, etc. Contact me at ksherman@residentrealty.com and we'll set up a time to introduce you to Austin, the pros and cons of different areas and ultimately finding you your dream home!

Sushi, yes it can get confusing but perhaps I can help (I also answered your class size question, btw). Which schools/district I would recommend really is going to depend on your price range, which high tech company or companies you would like to be close to (there are ~2400 scatterred throughout the Greater Austin area...we are 2nd in No. of 'high tech' companies only to 'Silicon Valley'), and other Home/Amenities/criteria as well. There are quite a few highly rated Districts (Eanes, Lake Travis, Leander, Round Rock, to name the main one's) that MAY be of interest to you. Your best way to approach this is to work with a skilled Realtor and let that person ask all the right questions to best determine which area/schools might be best to suit YOUR needs. Asking questions on a forum like this is somewhat helpful, but a Realtor such as myself can help you focus and take the guess work and confusion and conflicting answers OUT of the equation!! As I mentioned in my other answer to your class size ?, I am a Residential Specialist and am able to assist you and your family at NO cost to you!! Please contact me asap if you would like to discuss Buyer Representation. I have a GREAT team of lenders, inspectors, and even an 'education consultant' with many years of experience IN the school system to assist us.

p.s. Just curious if your name indicates Japanese origin? I lived in Osaka, Japan and loved it!! Watashi wa Nippon ga suki desu!!

Thanks everyone for all the great links. The schools ranking websites are very useful in most cases, but in Austin there are so many 10 rated schools that it becomes hard to differentiate them. We are wondering if the 10s are about equal or some are substantially better. We can't tell much from those website and finding quantitative score of different tests are pretty hard, thus professional opinions are much needed.

Lake Travis ISD is also an exemplary ISD and the area is more affordable than Eanes. Steiner Ranch is also a very popular neighborhood and offers exemplary schools. You can contact me at 512-695-5144 or kristee@theleadersrealty.com to discuss your home search further.

If being close to downtown is truly important to you, Eanes is a good choice. When you say, " close to the high tech companies", are there one or two companies that you are interested in? The reason I ask is that there are other exemplary or highly recognized school districts, with newer neighborhoods, a bit further out. Lake Travis ISD and Leander ISD are two such examples. Lake Travis ISD is a smaller district, with most of its schools rated exemplary. Leander ISD is recognized, with areas in the district that are exemplary. You will just want to make sure that the traffic is not a problem between your new home and the high tech companies that you are interested in.
If you are not currently working with an agent and would like more help with your home search, I would be happy to help. Feel free to call, text or email, anytime. I have lived in Austin for 34 years and love sharing what I know about Austin.

I have attached a link to the Texas Education Agency's 2011 District & School Accountability Ratings, for your convenience. If you like, I can email you another document for schools in the area.

Check out this web link. http://ritter.tea.state.tx.us/perfreport/account/2011/index.html
This has easy ways to look at accountability ratings by City, County, or Region.

Don't forget private schools if you are looking for the highest education. I think you will find that some of the private schools blow away the publics. Contact Aaron at St Michaels for a tour and information package.

Best Wishes...if I can be of personal assistance Call ~ Text ~ Email ~ I will respond quickly.

Hi Sushi,

I specialize in relocation to Austin and have worked with many clients in the high tech industry. Eanes is a very good district, but expensive. Our high tech employers are a little scattered, so the perfect location for you depends on what employer you are working for. If you have not already secured a job, I have a list of several companies that are hiring, what positions they are looking to fill and whom to contact. Please contact me directly at ksherman@residentrealty.com and I will get you this list, my relocation presentation that includes links to all school ratings and I'll also give you my opinion on which schools are the best fit for you based on where you'll be working.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Good morning,
Yes Eanes ISD is considerred the best by most out here due to high rating/exemplary status. If soaring with the eagles in Eanes is important, I might be able to get you in a certain pocket area, depending on your needs in a home.
I have school reports on my website you can explore, and more importantly is for me to get you my questionnaire so I can really help pinpoint a solution for you.
Youll hear things like Round Rock ISD and Lake Travis ISD, however without proper consultation, its almost a disservice to recommend it.
my Questionnaire is two pages of easy details.
Register on my website here and Ill get in touch with you to help out.
