Setback requirements for Addition to house in Darien CT

Asked by Inquisitivemind, New Jersey Sun May 4, 2014

How strict is the town regarding the setbacks for building an addition to the existing house? For example, on a non-conforming lot( width 50 ft compared to minimum 60 ft) the building is a little short of side setback requirement - total 17 ft compared to allowed 20 ft for R15 zoning.

Strongly suggest you submit plans for addition to Planning & Zoning or risk delays and possible fines.

Asking for a variance in advance is always better than paying a fine and doing it over again after doing the work. In setting rules most areas understand that there have to be some exceptions for unusual situations and may allow for some compensating factors to allow you to do what you want to do, or close to it.
When you meet with the local code officials, if you get permission get it in writing with the name of the person providing it.
