Antonio's suggestion to look in S. Tampa (south of Kennedy Blvd) is good advice. Just be sure to buy in the Plant High School boundary within S. Tampa since it is the highest demand. If you want a newer and generally more beautiful home you might also consider Harbor Links within Westchase, zip 33626. You can get a very nice upscale home in your price range in Westchase or a comfortable older home in S. Tampa. Westchase has beautiful community amenities, 2 pools, tennis courts, world class golf course, etc. but you will pay for the maintenance and also pay off muni bonds via an extra CDD tax on your property tax bill. You will get a significant reduction on your monthly water bill since the lawns have free reclaimed water. Here's info about Westchase:

Good luck on your relocation to Tampa. Forbes' analysts are expecting Tampa's Real Estate market to recover faster than any other area in the US.

Hello Craig,

Apart from the commute time, and A rated schools, what does your potential home and community look like in your mind? There are some great areas to choose from. Are you looking for waterfront, close to shopping, a newer home or development etc?

If you care to give more details that would accommodate your criteria, the search area could be more specific.

Ballast Point and Anderson elementary schools are "A" rated.

Here is a link to use to get information related to schools in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco Counties.… You can get the school grades and more. Pick what schools you would prefer and then as Realtors we can send the housing that meets your requirements that are around the schools you want your kids to go to.

One thing to note is that the schools can change especially in areas where there is a lot of building going on. In more established neighborhoods this is usually not as big of concern.

Here is the website link for Hillsborough County School System:
You can use it to search for A rated schools in the Tampa area. South Tampa has serveral A rated schools at all education levels. There are also some very good small and large private schools throughout the this area.
The commute from Tampa to St. Pete is not as bad as the commute coming the opposite way. A lot of people live in St.Pete and come to Tampa for work. THe price range that you listed in your question will get you into a very nice home in the South Tampa area. That is were I would recommend you starting you search.

There are a number of excellent areas that would put you both within 45 minutes of work. Easy access to I-75 or the Crosstown Expressway would be important to acheiving that commute time. When are you coming this way. I'd be delighted to set up some homes for you to see. In the meantime, I could send some info to you via email so you can begin your search right where you are. Ron

Hi, I think this condo might be a good solution to the commute. It's easy access to the Howard Franklin Bridge which is what gets you to St. Pete and is within 10miles of MacDill. The condo is also not far from the alternate way to St.Pete, the Gandy. Check out the site listed which has an address to investigate travel patterns and traffic. It's for sale or rent and seems well within your price range.

I am a Coldwell Banker Realtor and ex-school teacher, born in Tampa, and I would be happy to help you with finding a location in an A-rated school district. I have many schools listed on my website with their school grades. We do not have the 2007-2008 school grades yet. In that price range, you'll be able to move into any neighborhood. I taught school here in Tampa for 14 years, middle and high school English and Journalism. I also worked for the Florida Council of Independent Schools, the association that accredits most of the independent schools in Tampa. The critical question as regards school grades is what grade your children are in? There are only one or two A-rated high schools.
You will get the most house for your money if you go up to the north part of Tampa; therefore, if maximum square footage is a priority, I would go there. A commute to MacDill at rush hour is about 35 minutes on the Veteran's Expressway. However, there are some excellent homes in South Tampa. Commute then could be 10 to 15 minutes. Excellent schools in both locations. You'll get a much larger lot in North Tampa and could be on a lake or golf course. Does that sound like something you'd be interested in? Are your children interested in any particular sports? That may be a consideration as well.

Hi Craig,

Are you still looking for a home in Tampa? We are preparing to sell our home and it is in an ideal location given the parameters you describe -- it is one block south of Kennedy and two blocks west of Armenia. My husband commuted daily to MacDill and enjoyed the morning commute along Bayshore Blvd. I travel to Sarasota weekly for my work and pass through St. Pete within half an hour. The house is a 1920s bungalow with lots of charm and the elementary school is two blocks away. If you are interested in this kind of a home, feel free to contact me.

Dear Craig,
My husband and I are selling a home on Terra Ceia Island on the Gulf Coast. It is located south of St. Petersburg and in fact, as you go south over the Skyway Bridge, at the top, look to your right and you will see a body of land...that is Terra Ceia Island. Twenty minutes from St. Pete and thirty from Tampa and Sarasota. Our home is a two story Key West style, two bedroom, two bathroom with a four-car garage under the main living area with ten foot ceilings. It is on a canal lot surrounded by 298' of water and is only three houses from the open bay. No bridges to contend with. Terra Ceia has a definite casual lifestyle, with neighbors riding golf carts, bicycles, jogging or roller blading. The name Terra Ceia translates to "Land Heavenly" and it truly is! Our asking price is $399,000 with homes around us selling for million plus. Please look at our site on, key in 34250 zip code and look for our address 1115 Bayshore Drive. If you have any questions, contact our email address. Good luck in your search for your Florida home. Kathy Riley,

Fishhawk in Lithia FL would be a good place to start. There a number of people in the community that commute to MacDill AFB. The schools are excellent.

Another great area in my opinion with great schools and a great area to raise kids will be Lansbrook, Eastlake,Safety Harbor. I am sure every other agent will tell you my area is the best. When I moved from Chicago I took several trips to Clearwaterin order to decide where to move. Octavia

I gave you a link both in the answer and down below in the web references. I noticed even though they are the same link that it is not working from the main text, so if you look at my message use the link in web references. I will include it on this message also.
