... considering buying in Phoenix and another sister in Miami. Palm Springs tax rate and assessed value are set by state, but that doesn't seem to be the case in Florida or Arizona? Anyone know the property tax situation in these three cities?

Property taxes can vary from the usual 1.25%, in the Palm Springs area. Check with a Realtor for each specific property.

Hi Vicki,

I just had clients who moved to Palm Springs from Florida. They told me that the tax rate on property there is approaching 4%. I think the proposition 13 rates that we have in California are pretty fair overall.

By the way there are some companies out there sending out mailers that you can lower your taxes by paying them a fee - usually between $75 and $150 dollars. Don't fall for that you can do it yourself for free. There is an county office right in Palm Springs and the form is available for free online.

Good luck keeping up with your far flung family!

Hi Vicki:

In Palm Springs,CA (Riverside County) property tax is usually 1.25% of the sales price. However, the actual amount paid could be a little higher because of local bonds for schools etc. Additionally, with new developments there could be a Mello Roos tax. I am unfamiliar with the tax situation outside of CA but I am sure that you will receive answers from local agents.
