You have had some good answers already but I wanted to pass on a coulple of good school searching sights below. I also think that now is a great time to start looking and eventually buying in Westchester Co.

Because of the proximity to the city and great commute, there will always be a demand for property here. The residents also seem to maintain a high standard for their schools.

I live and work in Westchester and have children in the schools. I am very pleased with the schools and the community.

I am not a real-estate agent, so I can freely give you some insight from someone
born in one of the towns you cite, and very familiar with the others.
In order of (very arguable) generally accepted common belief, here is my breakdown:

Rye (Best of your choices, and I am not from Rye. But a starter home is $1M + at least through this last year's worth of Wall Street Bonuses)
Irvington (Excellent - nice, safe, small River town...)
Harrison (Excellent)
Mammaroneck (Very Very Good)
Edgemont (Very Good, but my personal belief is that Edgemont is surrounded by too many bad influences
Growing up in Westchester, the Edgemont teens always had easy access to drugs, etc)
Tarrytown (Good, and getting better, but still considered segmented by slow (ESL) and Fast-trackers.
Taxes generally disproportionate to value

My advice on this, beyond doing a little internet research on what houses are currently available, would be to find a local agent. Any agent can show you homes in different communities but an agent dealing with specific local communities might havs some better insight on what is well priced and even which sellers have more motiviation. We still have alot of sellers who think it is better to price high and negotiate down, then to price well and get sold.

Hi Natalie, I live in Rye and my office is in Tarrytown. You would have a better chance of getting something newish in Tarrytown and Mamaroneck for an 800k price tag. Keep in mind that with a newer home you taxes are going to be higher. Taxes are already high in all of these towns except parts of Mamaroneck and small parts of Tarrytown. Move in condition is an opinion, so if you want to elaborate I could give you a more educated answer. As for the schools you can visit my site http://www.ChristopherPagli.com and review school rankings. Pay close attention to the criteria used to comprise these reports, such as test scores, amount of children per class, challenge index, etc. What may work for some may not work for your child.

My best advice, and clients love this, is to visit the schools unannounced. This way they don't have time to prepare for your visit. You will see how they treat you and exactly what goes on during a typical day.

As Gail mentions, Realtors cannot by law tell you that one school district is better than the other. I live and sell homes in Edgemont and surroundings and would be more than happy to set up meetings or tours in different schools districts so you can make an informed decsion about what is best for your children. I am a mom of three boys and although I have just started the school thing, I personally am very happy here in Edgemont so far. Prices are more reasonable in the Westchester area and there are some things in the $800K price range that are great.
