Looking at unit between North & Wabansia and east of Ashland. Worried about crime, interstate noise & walkability, but the price is right; thoughts?

Look at the city of Chicago's website. They have a crime checker section, where you can look at different neighborhoods and areas.

Walk the area, go have coffee or grab some food there and see if its right for you and you feel comfortable there. Do your research online as well. For price have your agent do a market analysis for you and show you the recent comps.

You can walk to the Hideout, Home Depot, and Stanley's, not to mention look out your window to get a traffic update. What more could you want from a Chicago 'hood?

Realtors may not comment on the safety or crime in an area for fair housing reasons but their opinoin doesn't matter. You need to go into your local police department and ask for data that you need to make an informed decision.

Then go visit the area at different times of the day and night to get a feel. Once you've narrowed down a list of areas you personally feel comfortable in then enlist a good agent to take you out and show you the particulars of the homes in that area so you make the right choice.

Lonestar,

Being just east of Ashland at that location is loud. It is dirty as the exhausts from the highway have atrophied most of the trees. And it is tricky to access because of one ways, stop lights and narrow lanes mixed with the busy-ness of North and Ashland. Are you looking at a rental? Or are you thinking of buying? If purchase is what you have in mind, get set for the long term because reselling in this location is capital C challenging. If you are renting and if the rent is cheap you are close to the action and vibrancy of Bucktown and Wicker Park. Cheap rent makes most things bearable - so maybe endure the location for the set time you will be there.

If you are buying, find a smart and talented broker who can cut to the chase for you bearing in mind your budget while helping you find the best place in the best location.

Good luck!

We cant comment on this sort of thing. I would say go there at all different times of the day and night.

Regarding the buying process, get a good agent. Its free to use their services. Interview two or three agents.

Great area with a lot to do. You can find crime statistics on various websites, but the city of Chicago has quite a comprehensive site for doing so. Merely looking at the statistics alone may be difficult to interpret, so you should compare them against other neighborhoods you have interest in.
To get a better feel for the neighborhood (and your safety factor), you may want to stop there and spend some time walking around. Maybe walk to a local restaurant or the convenience store. If you're really concerned, do it at a couple of different times. If it feels good... GO FOR IT!!!
Feel free to call, email, or text any time with questions.
Cheers,
Tony

Location, location! If the noise from I-90/94 doesn't bother you then go for it.

There are a lot of considerations that go into an answer to this question so it can't really be answered in one paragraph. I have a lot of crime data I can share and noise and walkability easy to evaluate but then there are other factors as well. If you would like to talk you can call me at 312-738-0232 and we share our commission with our buyers while still providing full service.
