It's hard to answer a question about safety for someone else. I have a friend that moved here from Detroit and feels that all of MN is a "safe neighborhood", and a friend from a small farming community who doesn't feel safe in a town with more than a dozen people.
Your best bet is to spend a little time in a neighborhood. Visit in the morning and the evening. Visit on a weekday and on a weekend. Before you select a home, talk to the neighbors. If you don't feel comfortable knocking on the neighbors doors before you move in, why would you fell different after?
The new neighbors aren't just a good source of information about the neighborhood, they sometimes have "insider" information about the home you're considering.
Best of luck with your search!
