Dear Kathryn:

I really depends. If the older home is updated and has been well taken care of, an older home can be just as good as a new home. Problem with new homes is that you pay for the "new" factor and as a result typically get less square footage and features for the price point when compared to an older home. Either way you really can't go wrong, but personally I have done both, and the older home was the better purchase. Good luck with your home search.
