I specialize in sales of single family homes and condos/townhomes in Somerset County. Yes, taxes do vary by town - but a few townships do stand out in my mind as good values, most notably Bedminster, Warren, and Basking Ridge.
If you are open to a townhome, then Bedminster would have many options. One of the largest PUDs (Planned Unit Developments) in the country is "The Hills" which contains single family homes, townhomes/condos running on both sides of The Hills - one side is Basking Ridge (pricier) and the other Bedminster. Bedminster is convenient to the hub of 287/78/202/206 plus to the train station at Far Hills. "The Hills" offers other conveniences - such as shopping/restaurants and community living amenities such as pool/gym.
Basking Ridge offers a wide variety of home choices, prices tend to be higher than Bedminster and Warren. Inventory tends to move more briskly in Basking Ridge. Basking Ridge is convenient to Interstate 78 and Route 287 and has train and bus transportation to the city.
Warren offers primarily single family homes across a variety of price points. Warren is convenient to Interstate 78 and Route 22. For train or bus, you would cross 78 and go to Basking Ridge or Millington.
All three of these communities have good school systems - while not important to you directly at this point, it is helpful for resale.
