Good afternoon, Mandi:
There are stories of recent rental scams in Charlotte. http://www.wsoctv.com/news/news/local/man-says-his-home-was-… If you lost money on this transaction, you should report it to the NC attorney general.
There are some good tips on how to avoid rental scams on this website: http://rentalscams.org You ought to be represented by a licensed real estate broker who EXCLUSIVELY represents your interests an not those of the Landlord so that you are protected. Be extremely careful before you give any money to anyone who is not a licensed professional. If you appreciate an answer, please give thumbs up. You probably are, I wrote able blog post about this a while back. I will include a link to the blog below. Unfortunately we as realtors cannot help it, if someone takes information about one of our listings and republishes the pictures with fake information. If you have questions about a rental that seems too good to be true, please contact to a realtor to verify it is true. Have a great day.

Trust your instincts.. sometimes owners do list a property for sale and rent at the same time. Whatever comes through first they go with. That said a rent rate at 650.00 seems way off from a purchase price of 500k. Just saying.

good thing you checked....There is a lot of this going on right now with listings. I have run into it on a few of mine already. People are actually driving by and noticing the for sale sign and then calling me to check about the rental on it to find out it is not for rent.

Always verify that the place is legitimately for rent and go to the house and drive by and if necessary knock on the door to find out
