Great question!!!

Response Questions:
1. Will you be buying new? If yes, an energy efficient new home or just a regular new home?
2. If you are buying existing, what age range, i.e. less than 5 years old, or greater than 5 years old?

You can check out average utility costs of any property on the Madison Gas & Electric website. This link takes you to there: (or go to mge.com, quick links, average energy use and cost on left)

http://www.mge.com/myaccount/averagecost/

If you have an address in mind you can see what the current owner paid for the last year.

Madison's city website is a great place to get many other questions answered.

Good luck - you'll feel at home here, winter-wise!

Dave hit some good price estimates. It also depends on if you live in a house, condo, duplex or apartment.
Are you looking to stay in Madison and suburbs or maybe a smaller town surrounding the city. Some rental units have the utilities included with the rent payment.

Tim,

Utilities (gas & electric) and water all depend on usage, but if you're one person as opposed to a 5-member family, a good estimate for those would be $150/month. Add in phone, internet and TV and that's probably another $80-$125. The utilities are public so if before you purchase a house, I would check those out. The other items can be bundled to save money but they're still a sizable cost to monthly housing, even if you ditch the landline for cellular
