first time that there is railroad track directly behind some of the homes we were looking at. We have two small children so this is obviously a concern. Who can I contact to find out information concerning this. I am particularly concerned with how fast the trains move when going through the neighborhood, how often and at what times they go through the neighborhood, etc. Any insight into this or feedback from people who are familiar with this neighborhood would be appreciated.

I am a resident of Lake Erie Shores and a lifetime resident of the area. The track is used once or twice a day no more than a couple of times a week. The train is a very slow moving train of no more than a couple of cars at a time. It commutes back and forth between the various factories in the area and the riverfront area in Fairport. It is not a problem at all. Many residents here aren't even aware that the track is active. You occasionally hear the train whistle but that's about it.

I live at 863 Pebble Beach for the past 3 years and we were also very concerned about those tracks. There is a train that comes through every couple of days. It moves very slowly and it only has 1-3 cars on it. It goes down to pick up and drop off from a company near the lake and then takes it back to Grand River.

I have a 2 year old and I have noticed that when the train comes through, they are EXTREMELY conscious of the neighborhood and wave at us from the train. I don't think someone could get near the train if they tried. Also, when the train moves backwards with caboose first, there is always a man standing at the back watching the tracks. Hope this helps.

Matt, I believe Norfolk Southern Railway owns these tracks. You might get the information you need by calling their National Customer Service Center: (800) 635-5768.

At first thought, I would suggest talking to some of the neighbors there. You can get some great, no-bull answers from the people who are directly 'in the know' about the area. Aside from that, you can talk to the agents that are in there to see if they know anything, but I would still suggest just talking to some of the people you see out in their yards.

Good luck!
