How will gasoline price increases affect real estate?

Asked by Marilyn Messenger, Concord, MA Thu Feb 23, 2012

Will escalating gas prices change buying decisions? Will buyers still go to open houses or will they have an agent help streamline the process?

If they can't afford to look they can't afford to buy.

How much more streamline can we get than the internet?

Higher gas prices may mean higher prices for better located communities and those that have the MBTA and commuter rail.

Two thoughts I have had on this:
1. I wonder if clients will go back to driving in our cars. Over the years, this has become less the 'norm' than it used to be (at least in my market).
2. Around here, we are already seeing buyers refuse to look at homes with oil heat. They will only look at natural gas (not propane!!). I think that is going to get even more prevalent and it will 'hurt' the resale of homes currently running with oil.
