How much, would it cost to vent a kitchen stove/cooktop fan to outside?

Asked by Linda Franz, Missoula, MT Mon Sep 24, 2012

Many homes in Missoula without fans vented outside, even more expensive homes.

It would actually depend upon your cabinet type like if its wooden then it would be costlier and if it would be steel then it may cost a bit less than wooden.

It depends on the way the cabinets are, the attic, the electrical. I did one for $75 labor for a lady, but there was an electrical outlet in the cabinet above the stove.

Interesting. I have a few different outlets in my kitchen, but none right above the stove. I didn't think there was anything wrong with my ventilation, but my realtor says it's a selling issue. Should I have someone look at it to make sure it's really something I need to fix? | http://www.eastcoastfire.net

As you might expect, the answer is "It depends." If your stove is close to an outside wall or doesn't have living space above it, costs might be lower. The factors will be
1)how can we get a pipe to the outside? Through a wall, or up through the roof?
2)do we have to reconfigure cabinets to install it?
3) how easy is it to connect wiring to install the fan?
4) can we do some or all of the labor ourselves?

Good luck!

Where is the stove located within your kitchen? ie. outside wall, inside wall, on an island?
Are there cabinets above the cooktop?
Are you on a crawlspace or finished basement?
What kind of siding do you have?

Where you want the vent located is really good thing to know. That will help determine costs of the project. It might turn out to be a simple fix or something more complex because of the placement. It would also be good to talk to a couple of different companies so you can compare estimates and get a good idea of how much it will cost.

Good idea to vent it outside.

It would depend on what's above the stove; cabinet-wise.
It would depend on what's about the Cabinet; ceiling-wise.
It would depend on what's about the ceiling; attic-wise.
It would depend on what's above the attic; roofing wise.

You should have a contractor look at it and give you an estimate:
It could be $200; it could be $1,000.
It depends.
