How much does it cost to put in a skylight?

Asked by CRB61911, Port Washington, NY Sat Mar 2, 2013

There are a number of Hollywood splits and continental style homes in Jericho (East Birchwood) with high ceilings, which is great. But one we are looking at does not have a skylight (unlike so many others). How much -- including C.O., permit, materials, labor and everything -- would it cost to put those in?

Hello. I am no contractor and would advise that you request a free estimate if possible, from a general contractor. Every home is different. Therefore, the costs may be different as well.

I hope this answered your question! If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me by the ways below.

Good call. I was going to suggest the same thing. If you have a specific skylight in mind, it's a good idea to talk to several contractors about the specifics for your home. They can give you cost estimates and advice you can't from anyone else. |

This depends on a number of variables, including unit cost of the skylight, type of operator (electric or manual), whether a "chimney" has to be constructed around the skylight to pass through an attic space or whether location is a vaulted ceiling, type of roof construction, and other factors. A typical 30x48 skylight in tempered glass might have a unit cost of approx. $300 as a fixed unit or $350 manual operator, and an installation cost of $400-$600 in a vaulted ceiling with an existing roof of good condition architectural shingle. But there is a great deal of variability, and cost depends largely on site conditions. I am a General Contractor in Nassau as well as a Real Estate Agent. I provide complimentary estimates to all prospective home buyers in my area.

I would consult with a licensed home remodler, but you are looking at upwards of $1,000. There are a lot of factors such as type of skylight etc.

Consult with a few local licensed general contractors and ask for free estimates, then go from there...

My grandmother had a skylight in her home, and I promised myself that I would get one when I grew up. I am currently in the process of purchasing my first home. It doesn't have a skylight, but everything else is perfect. I am going to take your advice and get some free estimates. Thank you for your help.
