How much does it cost to put gas into a house that doesn't have it?

Asked by 1sttimer, 20002 Mon Jun 16, 2008

I'm looking at buying a house that is all electric and does not appear to have gas at all. I prefer gas for cooking and for a hot water heater. I know this is a major project for a property, but I want to know how much doing something like this would cost before I consider making an offer. Anyone have any advice?

It can really vary. Ask Washington Gas or, if it uses private contractors, get several bids. It may be in the range of $7,000...if I remember correctly. I had it done with my home (in Northern Virginia) about 12 years ago and have been very pleased with gas as opposed to electric. The conversion also involved switching from a heat pump to installation of a gas furnace (and thus converting the heat pump to serve only as airconditioning).

Hope that helps.
