You can always check out the local paper online and look at the police column to get an idea of crime activity

Try talking to neighbors, checking out crime statistics with the local police department, etc. A REALTOR cannot comment on the "desirability" of a particular neighborhood and/or development.

I hope this answered your question!

Wishing you the best of luck,

Good afternoon John,

You can find great statistics on the City-Data.com website. Everything from US Census Bureau demographic information to crime statistics, school reports and even annual weather analyses are available for potential homebuyers on that site.

I've linked it for you; see below.

Greenport grew from a small, mostly Greek fishing village, to a thriving seaport city on the North Fork of Long Island. Greenport retains that small town feel, and neighbors look out for neighbors. The location of my listing on Gull Pond Lane is very exclusive and private. Nearly 8 acres of wooded natural wonder, it is on a double cul-de-sac, on the water, it's the perfect location for a home in the heart of nature, yet walking distance to the center of town. Best of all, it's bordered on 2 sides by a nature preserve, so your only neighbors are the rare birds, and small animals that live in the preserve. The deeded docking rights on the fixed/floating dock on Gull Pond is a deepwater, protected harbor, leading directly to Gardiner's Bay and the Hamptons, or Shelter Island by boat.

Call me today to set up a time when you can see this lovely property. Not the typical farmland, this home is surrounded by mature trees, cool green ferns and rare birds. With a view of the water, it really is the best of the land and of the sea.

A second building on the first parcel is used as a professional recording studio, and artists of all kinds will find this property inspiring and an environment where creativity flourishes.

Call me at 516.426.9459 to set up a showing. Owner will finance up to half the purchase price for well-qualified buyers.

And, yes, contact the local police department for crime statistics. What I can say is that I feel safe walking alone in Greenport at most any hour.

Hi John, the best way is to find the statistics is online. Trulia has some good local crime info, as well as many other sites. Don't visit your local police station, you will waste your time and get opinions rather than facts, I was a police officer for 20 years. I've worked in places that some cops thought was a war zone and other's a paradise. On-line you will get the facts without the opinions.

When it comes to any safety/crime related issues, it's always best to contact the local police department with all your questions, hear all there is to hear firsthand. If unfamiliar with the area(s) do revisit more than once and at different times of day, possibly chat with locals/neighbors. Real estate professionals are prohibited from steering, enticing a buyer to purchase/rent, or not, in specific neighborhoods.
