When it comes to any crime concerns, your best source of information is the local police department, why not visit/call and ask all your questions--hear all there is to hear firsthand--if not familiar with the area, do visit more than once and at different times of day, chat with locals if possible, look at everything of importance to you, etc., and then make your determination, will your comfort level be reached.

I agree with both the other posts below and have found that drving a neighborhood maybe on the weekend when people are working in their lawns is a good time to ask. Most are more than glad to give you the real low down on their neighborhood.
