Since you will be traveling on HWY 78 timing is critical. The distance is 15 miles. During peak traffic hours it could take as long as 30-40 min. During non-peak traffic hours the trip should take about 20 min. See the link to Google Maps in the web reference below for directions.

Was the information you received helpful? I own a home in Vista in the Buena Creek area and am an avid surfer (at least 4 to 5 days a week). It takes me 25 minutes to get to my favorite surf spot, Cardiff Reef).

I also have a Beach Casita in Leucadia where I live from Spring to early fall. It's about 300 feet from Beacons and a mile from Ponto's It takes me about 20 minutes to get there from my Vista residence and it's all freeway. 78 to the 5. South to La Costa.

There's nothing wrong with the freeway's as long as you don't go during rush hour. I've been driving both freeways and surface streets for over 3 decades and have never had a problem unless there's an accident or Southbound Vacation or weekend gridlock. Then the surface streets are your best bet.

I'll sometimes get off at Tamarack and cruise the surf line to check the waves out at all the great surf spots i.e. Tamarack, Warmwaters, Turnarounds, The Dip, Carlsbad State Beach, Pontos, Grandview, Beacons, Stonesteps, Moonlight, D Street, Boneyards, Swamies, Pipes, San Elijo campgrounds, Cardiff Reef, Seaside, Tabletops and all the secret peaks in between. There's so many great spots and free parking along the way that are no more than 20 to 25 minutes from San Marcos.

The trick is staying off the freeways. Take Las Posas Rd to San Marcos Blvd., and head West. Even with the traffic lights, it shouldn't take any more than 20 minutes. Distance is 11 miles. I've owned five homes in San Marcos. It's a great place to live, and when you've figured out the best routes, it's close to everthing.

Here's the backdoor to Ponto State Beach, Carlsbad State Beach, Stone Steps, Beacons and Moonlight. via Santa Fe to La Costa to Leucadia. I travel this route all the time as I have a home in Vista and a vacation home in Leucadia and I'm an avid surfer. When I'm not at my beach Casita I'm at my home in Vista and I'm still in the water at least 4-6 times a week..

It's the shortest in miles, time and traffic. I love it. Never hit a freeway if you don't have to. I've been here for 34 years and have made that my mission. As you can see it's 16 miles and even though it says 30 min. it hasn't taken me more than about 20 or so ever.

Good Morning!
Yes, it will take you about 15-20 minutes to get to Buccaneer Beach in Oceanside, which is probably your closest beach. Of course, as JR mentioned below, if you leave at 5pm on a weekday, it will take longer. Let me know if I can assist you in any other way!

I think you need to pick a particular spot on the ocean and mapquest it...the ocean is in many different parts of the why not pick a restaurant or particular location on the coast and map it?

Good luck.
