The first step, as the others suggest, is to check the tax record to see who's listed as the owner.

Also, check with a Realtor, who can pull that information up as well as the property's history.

A few other suggestions . . . .

Write a letter to "Owner, 123 Main Street" and mail it. If there's still an active forwarding address, it'll be delivered. If not, it'll be returned to you.

And the best way, I've found, is to knock on neighbors' doors. The neighbors will know the status. There's usually at least one neighbor who's like the community historian. You just have to find him/her. I've done that a number of times, and always gotten all the information I've been looking for.

Hope that helps.

you should first look up teh tax card for the city town the property is located. Most have them online and for those who dont, you have to go to the town/city hall. The tax card should show you the current owner. You can also search the date in registry of deeds or county office that records the deeds.

You can ask any local agent for information--contact any realty office and inquire--or, check the local public records office or, ask a neighbor(s) if they know any information regarding the property.

A visit to your county recorders office will get you the info as to what the status is with the property. It is most likely a foreclosure that the bank is just sitting on until the market improves a bit.
