How do I identify the boundaries for a particular school in the Shelby Co. School District?

Asked by Jen, Denver, CO Thu Feb 5, 2009

I'm trying to find the perfect home in the Farmington School district. I have been going back and forth from the listings to the School Zone Locator on the SCS website. Although it is helpful to look up a particular street it would be most helpful if I could see a map with the zones marked off. I've been searching in the 38139 zipcode, but have mostly found homes in the Dogwood district. I understand that Dogwood is also a good school, but am most interested in Farmington. I know that working with a qualified real estate agent will be my best bet, but I'm not ready for that yet and won't be for several months. I'm attempting to educate myself BEFORE establishing partnership with an agent. I appreciate any and all help and answers.

Hello Jen,

The school districting may change in May/June for Shelby County. So, you say you are not ready for several months to enlist the help of a professional - I would suggest not driving yourself crazy since you have one school district in mind and let it rest.

Amuse yourself and just check out the awesome listings in 38139 - when you get close to drop dead time, then hire yourself a good Realtor and only look for listings in the Farmington SD in your price range.

Welcome to the area and know that there are some really fantastic agents here to help.

Hi, Jen,
There is a site called Zillow that is at least a little bit easier, because the school is actually listed under the photo of the home, , just put in the city you are interested in , look for the words -See Homes in a list- and click on that - Zillow is not always up to date, pricing changes is 7 days late sometimes in their rotation ,and occasionally the homes are into contract , but it is a little faster. try the street names sometimes that helps, you know where Farmington is on Cordes, as the other agents have stated even some on the same street may go to different schools- sad thing is we agents have to do the same thing you are doing- checking each address, but as others have spoken it is never a concrete thing!- 2 of my 3 kids went to Farmington-they loved it !!-take care -Patty

Hi Jen,

You really can't determine geographic boundries as such, except to assume that the area immediately around a school is within that schools boundries. However because of trying to contantly balance the population in the schools and new schools being added, you really can't be sure by looking at the geography only. I am not aware of a map that shows the geography of a particular district, however I will check to see if one exists and let you know.

Let me also say that there are several elementary schools in the eastern part of the county and all enjoy a good reputation.

The school district will have a map of their service area, which would be the most accurate way of figuring things out. Be careful though, rezoning happens all the time. So if you settle on the edge of the district, you my wake up in another district before you know it.
