Eichler homes in Palo Alto; how much to heat one?

Asked by Phil, Castro Valley, CA Mon Feb 28, 2011

These have lots of single pane glass, no attic and negligible ceiling and wall insulation -- how much do they cost to heat in the cold months?

It is a little difficult to give you a number because it depends on the square footage of the home and the type of heat. They were originally built with radiant heat systems but many of those original systems have been replaced. Also, Palo Alto owns its own utilities and the bill in combined. That being said, it will cost more to heat an original Eichler than a ranch home with less glass and more ceiling insulation but there are things that can be done to lower the cost. Many people install foam over the tar and gravel roof. There are newer heating systems that are energy efficient, and window coverings can be used that let in light but help keep the heat in.
