Be prepared by knowing the conditions. I have never used chains in my 30 years living at Tahoe. However, I own a 4 wheel drive and snow tires. Tahoe does not mean SNOW SNOW SNOW and more SNOW. Right now, there isn't a spec of snow on our roads. Chains are used for "events".

Thanks for clearing that up. I recently moved from Minnesota, but I don't have chains. I do have a 4-wheel drive vehicle with snow tires. Since I don't plan on crossing a mountain pass in the middle of a blizzard, I think that this setup will suffice.

Generally chains are only required to drive over the mountain passes or up steeper hills. When a severe storm is in progress it is advisable to postphone travel even when you have a four wheel drive. Snow removal is excellent if you wait an hour or so after the blizzard let's up.
