Do You Google Your Clients?

Asked by Joe Nernberg (Amerispec), Los Angeles, CA Mon Dec 30, 2013

I do this mostly for curiosity. Last year, a found that a client had a lot of ethics complaints. I did the job anyway... then dashed to his bank and cashed his check the same day. When I was dating, I Googled these ladies first.

I usually try and take a peek on Facebook and google them every time. I look at this not on the creepy side, but more like doing your homework in order to better understand their needs. The more you know up front the better. Often times you will find someone you know in common.

Hmm, I have googled suspicious people and then they don't usually turn out to be clients, if they are suspicious right?

I have actually avoided what I would consider dangerous and time wasting situations by using google to decide why the hair on the back of my neck is standing up. But once I took this guy around who claimed he was buying million dollar homes with cash, googled him a little late. Nice guy, not the real deal.

Not so much. I have, to maybe get to know them better. If I were dating I would definitely Google them.

I have, but do not typically do so. I'm more likely to check out their website if their email has a unique domain though.

Yes, and I expect them to Google me, too. And Facebook me. And Twitter me. And LinkedIn and Youtube, etc. me! I actually go to Facebook first, as this venue gives me the best all around picture of a client's needs. Does he/she have children? Aging parent who needs to move in with them? Love walking on the beach or has allergies to paint? I want to know the people I serve so I can see homes in their eyes, whether they are buying or selling.

Hi Joe,

Good question. I don't usually Google my clients as most are referred to me. I have Googled clients who are self-employed, though.

Not always, but it seems like a good idea!

I do...I find it helpful to know whatever I can about my client prior to speaking with, or meeting them. It vies me a leg up on rapport building and understanding their needs.
