Closet Required For A Bedroom?

Asked by Joe Nernberg (Amerispec), Los Angeles, CA Thu Mar 7, 2013

Cannot find anything in the building code that requires a closet for a sleeping/bed room. Is this an appraiser issue, real estate requirement?

In order for the department of building and safety to issue a certificate of occupancy (bedroom added) you need to comply with their rules and regulations. Depending on the city they may have different rules. My experience with city of LA - they do require a bedroom to have a closet.

Hope this will help you!

To be defined as a bedroom a room must have a closet but you can certainly sleep wherever it suits.

As far as I know... its not consider a bedroom unless it has a closet. Yes the appraiser will mention this on the report and will consider that room as an office area/ bonus room.

Yes as far as I know you do need to have a closet to consider a room a bedroom. Furthermore, I believe you need to have a window for it to be considered a bedroom also.
