Can my kid go to any school in Contra costa county schools in San Ramon?

Asked by Vayu, Fremont, CA Wed Sep 26, 2012

I've seen a home today in Contra Costa county in 500k range which I like and in my budget. The elementary school is not so good (81%) but my agent is saying I can send my kid to any school in the county. There's a good school in 5miles proximity. Can I send my kid to that school? Is that true?

It might work out if the school gives permission. Some schools are crowded and there is no room. I suggest you call the school and ask. In my 16 years on the Dublin board I have seen it go both ways. BTW, Dublin schools are excellent.

Always talk to the appropriate county and school officials before making any decisions – they are always the final authority.

You should positively confirm with the school before you buy a house no matter which area you buy in. You cannot send your child to any school within the county.

In some cases the schools may allow an inter district transfer based on the fact that you work in the other district and you can drop and pick up your child from work. I am not sure if that Contra Costa County allows it, but you must check with them to confirm.

Hi Vayu,

I believe your Agent may have misspoke or you misunderstood a comment your agent made. Attendance schools are assigned by the School District; in this case, San Ramon Valley USD. You cannot unilaterally send your child to any school in the County.

In addition, as can be seen at the San Ramon Valley USD website below:
http://www.srvusd.net/cms/page_view?d=x&piid=&vpid=1…

"*Please note: Many schools and grade levels are impacted by growth and students may not be able to attend their resident school. Please contact your resident attendance area school for further information and to verify the address."

One way to facilitate your new home search is to take a peek at http://www.SchoolAndHousing.com
Based on property address, SchoolAndHousing provides attendance area schools (Public, Private and Daycares) along with useful performance statistics and other information.

They also have a mobile application, which is quite handy when you are viewing homes! Just access http://www.SchoolAndHousing.com on your mobile phone to download the app.

Before making an offer you should call the School District to CONFIRM the schools the property will feed to!
