Am wondering whether it is better to buy in Avon, Simsbury, or Farmington? Best schools? Community? Restaurants? Crime? Raise kids? Thanks!

Since real estate professionals are prohibited from steering, enticing a buyer to purchase, or not, in specific neighborhoods--research further on your own, check out area statistics online, demographics, for safety concerns contact/visit the local police department, etc., and if needed do revisit areas--then make your determination, where will your comfort level best be reached and where will you be happiest living.

I can understand your dilemma in choosing between these three towns which are all located just west of Hartford and are similar in many ways. The best agents will want to interview you about your values --- sometimes proximity to the airport, access to an indoor soccer facility, quick access to I-84 or having the best housing stock to meet your needs in your price range makes the decision easier.

In terms of schools, there is no substitute for you as a parent visiting the local schools and board of education offices to gain an in-depth perspective (websearches only go so far). Principals are supposed to act as educational leaders in their communities and, as a former teacher, I see that the faculty tends to reflect the values of their leader.

Best of luck with your move!

I live in West Hartford, which is basically right in the middle of all of them. Many people consider West Hartford a great place to live as well. I have detailed demographic reports available on each town you are interested in. Call me when you are ready to begin you search and I can go over them with you as well as provide a guided tour of the the local sites, point out the good restaurants and even arrange for school tours. Hello, Mel!

Realtors aren't allowed to recommend one town over another as it's called "steering" and is illegal, but we can point you in the direction of where to do your research on communities.

Town of Avon Website;
Town of Simsbury Website;
Town of Farmington Website;

Regarding the demographics of each town, try this link;

I see that you are from MA. I am a licensed realtor in both CT and MA so if you need any further assistance in MA, CT, or both please contact me at
