There are artist's spaces available on Chestnut Ave near Greer Stadium. As far as where artist are living there are many in East Nashville there is also a fairly strong gay community as in most cases they were the brave "urban pioneers" that led the gentrification movement there. As far as where to hang out, the local "gayborhood" is on Church street near downtown & Baptist Hospital.

East Nashville is seeing some great arts emerge also. This weekend we actually had the Tomato Arts Festival near the Garage Mahal (art gallery). The area has an active gay residential area. Many of the neighborhoods were pioneered by the LGBT community. Popular "Lipstick Lounge" is the gay hotspot in the east with Mad Donna's opening across the street soon.

V_harrell is correct, the gay area is Church Street and includes bars Tribe, Play, Blu, Lucky's Garage; restaurants Red and Chappy's; retail Joe's, Outloud! and the new OutCentral gay resource center (opening soon). Art-wise, there are little (if any) few art outlets in that immediate area. The downtown arts district / art avenue would be the closest there.
