Why is the word realtor capitalized?

Asked by Nadia, Maine Thu Dec 27, 2007

I keep seeing the word written in all caps on this website. We don't capitalize other professions, like TEACHER or SALESPERSON. Is it a acronym like SCUBA? Just wonderiing if there's a reason or if people are just trying to give extra emphasis to the word.

Hi Nadia,

The proper use of the trademarks includes the following:

This link will take you to everything you want to know (and a whole lot more) about the proper use of the trademarks owned by the National Association of Realtors.

Here is the link:

People often use the trademark name, REALTOR®; to generically refer to a real estate agent. But, in fact, as Elvis pointed out, not all real estate agents are REALTORS®. It would be similar to calling tissue a Kleenex, or calling a photocopy a Xerox. Real estate licenses are issued by the goverining state boards, and issued upon completion of education, testing, and background checks. Details vary by state. Status as a REALTOR® represents membership of a trade organization and agreement to abide by the guidelines of the organization.

One of the many important reasons consumers should choose a real estate agent who establishes and retains membership status as a REALTOR®, is the Code of Ethics by which all REALTORS abide, and the protections afforded to all consumers provided. Additionally, REALTORS® have an abundance of resources available to them from their local, state and national memberships. These resources all provide extensive education opportunities.

The National Association of Realtors also does much to promote home ownership in the US. The dues that your REALTOR® pays contributes to that support for all present and future homeowners.

Thanks for asking!

A Realtor is a member of the National Association of Realtors. It is a proper noun, as it is a professional designation rather than a profession or job title. Not all licensed agents are Realtors. As members of this national organization, we are held to a higher code of ethics than agents.
