We are relocating from Southern California in the next few months, my wife has a new job in the Soho area...

Asked by Russ Squires, Valley Village, Los Angeles, CA Sun Jun 17, 2012

We are looking for the best place to live. Biggest needs are great schools for the kids (age 8 and 5), and commute to the city. We have family in Caldwell, and are considering that, but it appears that would be a good 90 minutes each way every day, and that is too much. (Although being in LA now, she drives 7 miles one way to work and that takes 45-60, over an hour would be tough) Open to renting or buying (renting might be easier to start) price ranges would be $4-5k rent, and say up to a $1mm purchase.

Hi Guys....A wonderful area for you would be Rumson, or Fair haven in Nj. Close to the boat to lower NYC great commute..... The schools are wonderful, I have lived here for 35 years...My husband and I are both agents with Heritage House Sotheby's International Realty in Rumson.

Since you already have family in Caldwell area why don't look for something around (of course if you like it). You could add to your list Glen Ridge, Montclair and Nutley in essex county. These towns have very good school system. Or You could look into Suburb of Bergen county Rutherford, East Rutherford, Carlstadt, Wood Ridge. These towns are very easy to commute to the area you want to move, but they are not the higher neighborhood in Bergen county.
Let me know if I can be of more help!

Hi,

Many moon ago, I relo’d from SoCal to the east coast. I was in CT for a brief time and have now been in NJ since the 90’s. In SoCal I mostly lived in the beach cities of South Bay and Orange County.

When I moved to NJ, I looked at Short Hills and Chatam areas (which are lovely), but ultimately decided upon northern Monmouth County. Our community is comprised of a large number of NYC commuters, with most headed toward destinations in lower Manhattan. Residents commute to NYC via bus, train, car, and ferry. The Seastreak ferry is a 40 minute commute from Atlantic Highlands or Highlands, and Soho is very quick access from the ferry dock in NYC. Ferry commuting is efficient, easy and relaxing.

I chose Monmouth County for its relaxed lifestyle, open space, and beach and shore access. Red Bank is a vibrant town with Two Rivers Theater, Count Basie Theater, fantastic and diverse dining, art and boutique shops, waterfront park, numerous outdoor festivals and a hub for several small towns in the area. http://www.redbank.com/

Pier Village is Long Branch is popular for beach activities, dining, and strolling or jogging along the boardwalk.

The park system and recreation opportunities are abundant. There are several equestrian facilities for hobby or competitive riding. Large parks with trails for hiking and riding, as well as organized activities are within your immediate reach.

The vast riverways and tributaries provide for a variety of water activities, with marinas to accommodate small or large boats.

If you would like more information about the area, including independent school reports, maps, and housing trend reports, let me know.

Hi Russ

First of all.............No way would commuting from the Caldwells take 90 min. each way!
North Caldwell is a lovely town, and there are a number of options in your price range for renting or buying.

That being said...........how does your wife want to commute?

Bus from my area will take 55 min..............and there is also the option of the Mid Town Direct train into Penn Station, which will take anywhere from 37 - 45 min, depending on the departure town.

You might want to consider Millburn/Short Hills.
A lovely , updated home was just rented for $5000, and there are others currently listed from $4000-5000. The school system is outstanding (I am a graduate of Millburn High - a million years ago!! haha)...........the downtown area is charming..... there are a number of boutiques, restaurants and recreational activities to take advantage of.

Livingston is another town in the area, but from there, the bus would be the option, as in order to obtain a parking permit for the train station, you need to reside in the town - Livingston does not have a train station!

It would be helpful to know what your style preferences are.........for example, Livingston is newer, and offers more contemporary homes (also a highly ranked school system) - I just listed a custom contemp. for 799,000 that has soaring ceilings, skylights... and an open flow.........Millburn'Short Hills, in comparison, offers more Tudors and colonials, and a more charming, older feel.

Two distinctly different "flavors"...........

Of course, there are a number of other towns you might want to consider, such as Chatham, Madison,Summit, Roseland (closer to the Caldwells).....and the list goes on........

I have lots of local information to share, and would be happy to help point you in the right direction.
Please feel free to reach out to me at your convenience.

Best wishes............
