Thumbs down, it's been bugging me for a while so I thought I'd ask, what purpose does it serve?

Asked by Suzanne Walker, Oklahoma City, OK Mon Sep 17, 2007

I believe thumbs up and best answer is a viable way to reward exceptional responses but thumbs down is meant to have what effect? Why not reward what you like and just leave the rest alone? What effect does it have on a members ranking? When I see something negative, such as thumbs down, I always question the person's motive who gave it. I've seen questions with a thumbs down and in my opinion no question is ever wrong. Trulia is a great way to educate us about the vastness of the real estate industry. To be educated in real estate doesn’t mean you adopt every view point as your own but at least you are aware there are opinions outside of your own. Maybe thumbs down offers balance, but I’m yet to be convinced of that, since so many diverse people participate in this forum and the myriad of our responses automatically offers balance. Hopefully, the Trulia folks will offer their insight as to why this option is available and I look forward to everyone’s insight on this one.

Mr and Mrs W, - First, I want to compliment you on your excellent choice of a Real Estate name. The name Walker conveys professionalism and experience!

The thumbs question has been asked and answered many times before on Trulia.
It is feature available on many different forums on all manner of subjects besides Real Estate and Trulia.

While the thumb was originally tagged {up} useful and {down} not useful, many people don't know or interpret the thumbs their own way. For example some thumb down to disagree with a well presented opinion that is just an opposing opinion.

There are many vandals who visit Trulia and other sites and just post thumbs with no more thought or meaning than a real world visitor who throws their cigarette butts on your sidewalk.

There are plenty of posters who deserve thumbs down and don't receive enough of them. Those are the people who post me too type answers to the same question. and those who are trolling for referral fees on every answer.

I don't give thumbs down to newbies or to consumers. But pros who give blatantly bad advice, self promote to the point of annoyance - they deserve it.

Cumulative thumbs down do not affect a members ranking, nor should it.

A useful measurement (but not fool-proof) of a members writing is the Tuba-TA point system that I invented.

Hi Walker Group. I agree with you. As far as I can tell TDs have no impact on the ranking and they are just a way for people to express their dissent. Of course there have been abuses and we have had a few discussions about it on this thread. My personal approach is that I ignore TDs that are not accompanied by either a post explaining it or an e-mail to me. Just ignore them as you have no influence over it anyway. Welcome to Trulia Voices.

Shawn this question was asked in SEPT 2007!

When it was asked way back then...trulia had a "thumbs down" option.......they no longer have it, which is why this old question is totally irrelevant.

Me too. ;o)

P.S. Unfortunately I had to put in a P.S. since the characer minimum is 25. Kinda ruins the effect. Ah, well.
