So annoyed with realtor...

Asked by Nadia, Maine Thu Mar 13, 2008

We have terminated our contract with our selling agent. Let's call him Ron.

I would like to hire the realtor I had worked with when I sold my first house. Let's call her Betty. I didn't originally hire "Betty" again because, when we worked together previously, she had been short with me once. My experience with "Ron" has given me the insight to know that the service "Betty" gave me was otherwise just wonderful, and I want to work with her again.

When "Ron" found out that I wanted to re-hire "Betty," he told "Betty" that I had gone on and on saying horrible things about her. That is completely untrue. Now "Betty" is feeling understandably nervous about working with me because "Ron" said I trashed her. Which I didn't (and wouldn't, as I am over the age of 13),

I'm so annoyed at "Ron." I understand that he's frustrated over losing the listing, but lying in order to undermine my relationship with another realtor is so ridiculous.

(Names are fake, of course)

Betty will be happy to welcome you back into the fold. Once you're reconnected with her, explain the circumstances (without badmouthing Ron), and I'm sure she'll understand and happily take your listing.

Part of your conversation with Betty can be "What was it about Ron, and his handling of your listing, that you didn't like... so I can make certain to not make the same mistakes... AND what was it about MY handling of your listing that you DID like, so I can continue to provide you with excellent service?"

Everyone is right Nadia. Just call Betty and talk to her. It is no different then school people like Ron will get what is coming to them. Once Betty is reassured that what Ron said is untrue that will just add to his most likely tarnished reputation. I am a firm believer in what goes around comes around. So give Betty a call and just ask her to talk to you about your listing. Ron will bury himself soon enough.

Honestly, I am a Real Estate Broker and these things can sometimes go with the territory. Unfortunately, there are Real Estate Agents out there that give us a bad name. It is important you work with someone you trust will do a good job for you. If that trust is not there, the transaction can be less than pleasant. Just let Betty know that what was said is untrue and inform her of the reasons you would like to use her again. I am sure she would be very appreciated to hear the qualities that made you go back.
