Relocating to MacDill. Are there any decent neighborhoods (comparable to New Tampa) across Gandy Bridge?

Asked by P.h., New Germany, MN Wed Apr 9, 2008

Looking for the usual - clean, safe, middle class suburban home with good schools. Hoping to keep commute under 30 minutes. Don't want to fight Crosstown traffic from Brandon or traffic from New Tampa. Don't want to live in South Tampa. Thank you for any assistance provided.

Dear P. h.:

I can understand your problem. When commuting on the Crosstown you are flowing with the traffic. You will have this same problem with coming from Pinellas Park you will be crossing with everyone else from Pinellas county. There are Three Bridges connecting Hillsborough and Pinellas--Gandy, Howard Franklin and Courtney Cambell if any bridge has a problem you get an overload on the other two. You should also know that Gandy will be under construction for sometime. Hope this helps you.

I commute to MacDill daily from Land O'Lakes and I can tell you that my best time is 52 Minutes. But that is the sacrifice that I decided to make for a better home life for my children and lower taxes. (Then Gas Prices jumped a buck)

I am very familiar with the areas on the other side of Gandy and have sold plenty of property there. Depending on your price range, you could end up in any of the great areas along 4th Street near the water or in Pinellas Park.

At any rate, I have made the drive to MacDill for over 20 years from all over town and I agree, the Brandon trek is my least favorite.

No chance in commuting less than 30 min if your looking to live accross the gandy bridge. The new construction is going to slow you down. Dont know when you were in south Tampa last but you need to check out Port Tampa. New development and a commute less than 10 min.

just a suggestion for you, have you considered the Port Tampa area? near Macdill South of South Tampa? It is a great area, that is continuously improving.

westshore club II is a great area on the hillsborough side.
I am not overly familar with Pinellas county but my realtor friend Cyndee Haydon is

I have a nice condo for sale in a really great neighborhood called Countryside. This is a link to it and there is a virtual tour link at the bottom of that page. Let me know if you have any questions or would like to see it. My Dad is ret'd military and lives nearby so he could show it to you or someone looking on your behalf. (we were stationed in Germany too when I was small!)

I appreciate the responses that have been given, but please let me clarify my question. I have lived in Tampa before (Brandon actually) and am familiar with the area as I have family in New Tampa. My question pertains to the Pinellas side of the Gandy Bridge - I never ventured over the Gandy much when I lived in the area previously. What I specifically want to know is what that area is like. I am all too familiar with traffic in the Tampa Bay area. I commuted to MacDill via the Crosstown for four years. As a side note, to all potential home buyers not familiar with the area, Realtors apparently have cars that hover over the bumper-to-bumper crawl across the Crosstown. They seem to all say that the drive to MacDill from Brandon is 20 minutes. It is, at 3 am on Sundays. In the real world, count on 45 minutes - 1 hour. I guess what I am hoping to get as a response is a realistic, specific answer to the question posed - perhaps from someone who actually commutes across Gandy everyday and is specifically familiar with the Pinellas side. I appreciate the recommendations for Westchase, Oldsmar, etc., but have ruled them out as too long of a commute.

Dear Home Buyer,
Northwestern Hillsborough County the Westchase area is similar to New Tampa with newer neighborhoods and about 30 minutes to Macdill. Northeastern Pinellas County the East Lake area and Palm Harbor are also excellent choices. Both are close to Macdill and and have great schools!
Contact me and I can get you started.

Hello P.H.,

If you like New Tampa, don't discount Oldsmar in Pinellas County too. I think that it is good value and a reasonably easy commute to Macdill. When there are accidents on the bridge, it can hold up traffic for a long time.

I work locally. Feel free to contact me at 813-401-8078.
