Property tax goes up in Murphy?

Asked by BuyingTips, Dallas, TX Thu Feb 14, 2013

A friend of mine who lived in Murphy before told me that the City does not have any opposition from the residents, so the city raises the City tax regularly which will increase the property tax. In Plano which is a large city it is not easy to raise the tax as easy as Murphy. Any thoughts?

We have heard of property taxes, (across the Country) as low as 1% and as high as 4.3%!!

Mostly this is a function of how much people are willing to spend to live in that area: If they are used to being gouged by their County, then the local government continues to get away with it.

But it is also a matter of how well-run the local government is.
Until fairly recently; corrupt or incompetent officials could get away with anything: But inept is harder to weed-out, and tougher still, to do anything about.

We are forced to assume that those people know what they are doing, because they were qualified to get elected or appointed; not necessarily so.

Property taxes are usually raised when they need more money. period.

I don't think there is any way to predict this.

Probably the main difference between Plano and Murphy is where the taxes come from.
In Plano you do have a lot of retail which can help, virtually none in Murphy.
It's nice to me that you have a variety of places to raise taxes, not just from the residents.

In some ways it is even better if you can get them from people outside your community....
Like Oklahoma who has all the Texas gamblers crossing the border.
Or at the airport where they charge huge fees to people renting cars.

The % is very tiny and is less than 1. Don't the dollar amount make any difference?

The folks of Murphy are very active and the city by state law can only pass on taxes that approved by it's city council and state law in percentage increases. The main thing is the overall dollar value of homes in Murphy maybe greater than surrounding cities.

The price of the homes in Murphy are not high compared with Plano, yet it's high compared to Wylie. Comparing with homes in Plano, you may get more land and a feeling of home in Murphy.
