As a former resident of Eastern Long Island, I lived about 20 minutes South of Port Jeff. I did the commute into the city for a little over a year. I also did the commute within Long Island. They are both HORRIBLE. No matter what time of day you work, the LIE, the Southern State, the Northern State are always a parking lot. The LIRR is ALWAYS late, and/or CANCELLED! I was stranded in Jamaica and in other odd places on numerous occasions. Once you factor in all parts of the commute, you're looking at 2.5+ hours each way, on a day where traffic is okay and trains are on time. Forget about driving into the city! If you are looking for serenity, yes, Port Jefferson will provide it, but your commute will take it right away! Also, if you are single it may be okay that you spend so much time away from home, but if you have a family, you will be spending a lot of time apart if you are commuting on a regular basis. If you can telecommute then you'll be good. This is the main reason I chose to move to NJ... 45 minutes door-to-door ,on a bus that hasn't been late once in a year, I'm at work. Long Island, in my humble opinion, is vastly overrated.
