dare county has a 17% unemployement rate and counting so be prepared to work hard for little money. house prices are still fairly high compared with the rest of the country so expect it to consume most of your paycheck. if you are comfortable with saving very little for retirement and banking on the value of your house to get you into retirement, then i would suggest moving here, otherwise, i would stay where you can find employment. sad but true.

Hello Laura,
I too live in Colington Harbour. I moved here 8 years ago and it is a great community atmosphere. In terms of employment I would contact the local Dare County Governments, check our local papers - The Coastland Times and The Sentinel as well as the Outer Banks section of http://www.craigslist.com. I would be happy to email you the details for the local government agencies. I can also set you up with a home search through our OBX MLS system which will email you directly as soon as a new listing appears according to your critirea. Good Luck with the job search!

Have your thought about sending your resume to local lawyers, doctors, CPA's, Insurance firms, Outer Banks Hospital, NC Aquarium, College of Albemarle, or to local school systems? If your financial background includes knowledge of QuickBooks, you may be able to start your own bookkeeping business for independent contractors.
I relocated to Colington Harbour, Dare County from Chesapeake. I knew that I wanted to relocate here. We have had a 2nd home in Colington Harbour for a long, long time! I spent my off-time building houses, flipping houses, & selling real estate in Nags Head, so that eventually we could relocate here full-time. Please free to search the OBX MLS 24/7 on my website http://www.nagsheadhomes.com , when you begin your search for a home or if you find a vacant lot, I can build you a home!
Hope you are able to find a job here! Its a wonderful place to live.

There are plenty of jobs here on the Outer Banks to be had for a hard working individual. The problem is that are not many professional occupations. We do not have many salary type positions as most of the work is geared to the real estate, food service, retail, and construction business. If you can give me an idea of what you are looking for I will be happy to point you in the right direction. As for moving here I would be happy to show you around when you come down to visit the area and give you my take on the area. I made the move to the Outer Banks 6 yrs ago, to Colington Harbour to be exact, an have sinced lived in Kill Devil Hills and now Kitty Hawk. This is a special place to live, it's not like living any where else.

Feel free to contact me and I will happy to send you some listings so you can see what the houses are selling for. When you come down we can go check out a few in person. I can also put in touch with a local lender that can walk you thru the loan process to get you qualifed as well.

I look fowarwd to hearing from you!!

Yes it would difficult to obtain a loan unless you have employment or you going to pay cash for the home?
Then it does not matter.
Good luck http://www.lynn911.com

The links to all of the town' s websites can be found on the town pages on my website. You should be able to start there and make inquiries about employment. In the meantime, sign up for automatic email updates and you will get all the new listings sent to you. If you are coming down to look around I can get you a list of properties for sale with the address, price, etc and you can drive around and see if your price range will satisfy your needs. Let me know if you need a street map.
