Drive around and meet people.
Ask those who live there.
Interview the school professionals, coaches, etc.
Park in a neighborhood and see who notices you sitting there in your car.
Walk and talk.

Of course choosing a local real estate pro can help you save a lot of time.
(Not me, I'm on the Cape, but I can help you choose a local pro when you are ready.)

As someone who is not trying to sell you anything & is not a realtor, I will tell you that Laurenston st is definetly not a safe street or neighborhood. I don't know where you are coming from or how familiar you are with the area, but I know it well. I spent a large sum of my life over there.
There are alot of misleading sites online that make claims about the safety of Brockton, some sites state that it's one of the safest towns in MA, Wikipedia even says that it won an award 3 times as one of the top 100 best communities for young ppl.... In contrast there are many sites that state
the oposite. On ehow.com it is listed as #4 on the MA Top 10 Most Dangerous cities.
The truth of the matter is that it depends on where in Brockton. Some areas of the city aren't too bad. Generally the more dangerous sections are in downtown Brockton and any of the other areas that are busier sections and have the most buisnessness.

If you don't know Brockton and are looking for more information regarding it's safety I would suggest visting unbiased websites, that aren't trying to make you feel a certain way about the city.

The local police department has a Crime Prevention Officer or a Community Liason Officer who can give you crime rates and tell you whether the numbers they are providing are high or low for the community.

Additionally, google "Megans Law" for a website address that will allow you to identify all the sex offenders around a specific address.

Good luck!
